Backup funds

Carrying backup funds in addition to your credit card and a transaction account card gives you the ability to make transactions in a variety of ways if needed. That way, you'll avoid being inconvenienced by merchants who only accept certain currencies, cards or Travellers Cheques. It also provides you with added peace of mind in case your credit cards are lost or stolen. The backup funds worth considering are:

  • ANZ Travel Card
  • Foreign currency cash
  • Travellers cheques1

These may be purchased at ANZ Foreign Exchange Centres instantly or at an ANZ branch (foreign cash holdings vary between branches, therefore, some branches may require pre-ordering of cash).

ANZ Travel Cards

ANZ Travel Card is a secure and convenient way to take foreign currency overseas. ANZ Travel Cards can be used at ATMs and merchants worldwide, wherever Visa is accepted electronically. For security, each card has its own PIN number and is not linked to any other accounts.

Before you travel, simply purchase an ANZ Travel Card over the counter at your local branch. You can purchase the card in one of these four currencies:

  • United States dollars
  • Great British pounds
  • Euros
  • New Zealand dollars

When overseas, you'll then be able to use the card to make purchases with no transaction fees, with a competitive flat fee charged for ATM withdrawals.

Every customer receives a backup card for added security at no extra cost so, should your first card be lost or stolen, you can still access your funds. ANZ can also provide an overseas emergency replacement card if needed.

Travellers' cheques

Travellers' cheques are another secure way to carry funds and can be cashed easily at most banks, hotels, motels, restaurants, airports, and many shops. ANZ offers American Express® (AMEX) travellers' cheques featuring their renowned global replacement service. Should your travellers' cheques be lost or stolen, AMEX will typically offer an immediate refund almost anywhere in the world. AMEX travellers' cheques also come with the added benefit that they retain their value until cashed.

If you are an ANZ gold or platinum cardholder, you'll pay no commission when you purchase AMEX travellers' cheques through us.

*Please note that fees cannot be waived when travellers' cheques are purchased via ANZ Internet Banking.
